The fastest way to get answers about a New York probate or estate-planning matter is to book a 30-minute consultation with attorney Russel Morgan. Bring the basics — the county where the decedent lived, whether there is a will, and a rough list of assets — and we can tell you which Surrogate’s Court applies and what the path forward looks like.

Service area

Morgan Legal Group serves New York estates statewide, with a focus on New York County (the Manhattan Surrogate’s Court at 31 Chambers Street) and the wider New York City five-borough system — New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx, and Richmond counties. Because probate venue follows the decedent’s county of domicile under SCPA 205-206, one of our first jobs is confirming the correct county Surrogate’s Court for your matter.

What to bring or have ready

To make the consultation productive, gather what you can:

  • The county where the decedent was domiciled (their permanent home).
  • The original will, if one exists (or knowledge of where it is).
  • A death certificate, if available.
  • A rough list of assets — bank and brokerage accounts, real property, co-op or condo, business interests, life insurance.
  • Names of the distributees (closest relatives) and any named executor.

If you are planning ahead rather than settling an estate, simply bring your goals and a sense of your assets and family situation.

What to expect

We will help you identify the right Surrogate’s Court, explain the probate process for your county, and flag issues early — a co-op transfer, a possible will contest, or estate-tax cliff exposure — so there are no surprises later.

Finding the New York County Surrogate’s Court

If your matter is in Manhattan, the New York County Surrogate’s Court is at 31 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10007, in the historic 1907 courthouse at Chambers and Centre Streets. If the decedent lived in another borough or county, you will file in that county’s court instead — we will confirm the correct one with you.
